âHe wonât come out of his room. I donât know what to tell him.â
Gold sat in the dining room of the home in Havana, Cuba belonging to Arlene Rivera and the late da Vinci transporter chief. Rivera, a nurse, had been married to Chief Feliciano for ten years. The âheâ she referred to was their son, Carlos.
âHe turned seven a few days ago. Thatâs when he first locked himself in there. Now he only comes out to go to the bathroom. Thatâs when Iâve been bringing him food. But he wonât talk to me or to anybody.â Rivera had been holding a mug full of coffee for the entire time Gold had been sitting across from her nursing his own cup. She had yet to take a sip from it. A petite woman, she had jet-black hair and a round face that was marred by bloodshot brown eyes. âDiego promised heâd be home for his birthday this time. He missed it last yearâbecause of the war, he couldnât get away.â
The captain remembered Feliciano talking about having to miss his sonâs birthday when they had gone on a mission to salvage an alien ship near a secret Federation outpost. Ironically, that had been the mission on which Commander SalekâGomezâs predecessorâwas killed.
âHe promised that he would be home this time.â Tears started to run down her cheeks. âWhy didnât he keep the promise?â
Goldâs voice was a cracked whisper. âHe would have. Diego always spoke fondly of you and Carlos. âMy little Carlitos,â he always called him.â
A smile struggled to get through the sadness on Riveraâs face. âCarlos hates being called that. I think thatâs why Diego did it.â She shook her head, the sadness victorious over the fleeting smile. âWhy did he have to die now? He lived through an entire war; why did this have to happen?â
âI canât answer that. All I can say is that he died saving the lives of his crewmatesâand his sacrifice may have saved an entire race. And I also know that that doesnât mean a damn thing to a seven-year-old boy who wonât come out of his room. But someday, he will understand.â
âGood. Then maybe he can explain it to me.â She closed her eyes. âIâm sorry, Captain, Iâm not being fair to you.â
âNobody expects you to be fair, Ms. Riveraâhell, youâve got no reason to be. Itâs completely unfairâbelieve me, I know. I had to bury my own son during the warâhe was on Betazed when the Dominion took it.â
âStill, it means a lot that you came here. You didnât have to do that.â
âDiego didnât have to sacrifice his life the way he did, either. But he chose to. I think the very least I owed him was to let his wife and son know how sorry I amâand how much you meant to him.â
